A super tea that burns fat and overdrives your bowel movement. This is what the typical advertisement will tell you. Sorry to disappoint you but this is not why you lose weight from tea.
The good news is you can lose weight from tea. The reason behind this is totally biologically, and the substance of tea "theanine" plays a big part. There is a relation between theanine and weight loss.
Most people who tried to lose weight did one of two things, exercising or dieting or even both. For some people this is a piece of cake, and for others it doesn’t help at all.
Unfair but it depends on the nature of your body right? Well only partial. The reason why they have trouble losing weight is because they are not doing the right things. Excessing and dieting are not the only things you can do.
It turns out when you are stressed, your body is programmed to gain weight. So what role does l-theanine play here? First we have to break the definition of stress down. When you have stress the following three things happen in your body.
People who are stressed are more likely to get food cravings. Food cravings is a deep yearning to consume a specific food. People who never had "food cravings" might judge people who has them for it is just in their “head”.
The truth is that the yearning doesn’t come from the stomach. It does all come from your head, strange isn’t it? Fact when we are under stress our brain shuts down the part that suppresses appetite. The reason behind this is simple. When we are under stress we have the emotional need to calm that stress. And (un)lucky enough food does exactly that. It calms us down. This is why it’s called stress eating or comfort food.
Increased level of Cortisol
Cortisol is the hormone responsible for our early warning system. It increases when we are under stress. And is the hormone we share with all social mammals. Whenever u see a herd of gazelle and one of them thinks he heard a lion, his head shoots up ears and eyes are in full alertness searching for the danger. He doesn’t see/ hear danger. He takes a deep breath in and out, and goes back to grazing. This full alertness is cortisol. What Cortisol does is pumping glucose in our body so we are ready to fight or flight, kinda cool right?
The bad thing is cortisol isn’t designed to stay in our body. When you think you hear someone at night you shoot up look around, and if there is nothing you breathe it out and go back to sleep. Just like the gazelle it goes in and out.
Now let’s take a look at how we live our lives. In school that would be classes from 08:00 to 15:00 or 16:00. At work that would be an office which we stay from 09:00 to 17:00. In both cases we are locked. The job is hard deadlines are many, stress builds up and your cortisol level increases. It is designed for fight or flight, so or you hit your boss or run out of the office.
Of course none of the above would any sane person choose. We choose to live with it. But what happens when cortisol stays in the body?
Cortisol is designed for a stress situation. It shuts down non-essential body parts. More important because it stays in your body, your body thinks that times are hard and you need to survive. It will do anything for you to survive. So it will store fat you eat. The body will resist weight loss. It takes the fat of your butt and hips and place all those fats in your belly area.
Don’t believe? Take a look at the country with the best doctors, the best hospitals and the best medicine. BUT the people here must work or they starve. The people are treated as objects that easily can be fired, so they have to work there ass of. In this country (America) Obesity, Diabetes and heart diseases are all on the rise! All symptoms of too much stress and too much cortisol.
There has been research done on the relation between alcohol and cortisol. And it turns out that continuously drinking alcohol over an extended period of time raises the amount of cortisol in the body.
Alcohol has a lot of other negative side effects, but taking some l-theanine with your drinks reduces most of those negative side effects.
Increased Ghrelin levels
We all know that too little sleep is bad for us. And that stress is responsible for bad night rest. But only a handful of people know that it also affects our weight. When you have a lack of sleep, your body does all kinds of things. One of those things is increasing the level of the hormone Ghrelin.
When our stomach is empty it releases this hormone. When Ghrelin is in our blood we get the feeling of hunger. A lack of sleep comes with an increased level of ghrelin. Simpler said, a lack of sleep comes with an increased level of hunger. Causing us to eat more, even when we don't want to.
Theanine and Weight loss
With all this new info let’s take a look back on how we tackle the problem. Exercising more and eating less. Knowing that it all begins with stress, the conclusion is we are all doing it wrong! It is like keeping your lawn clean of weeds (not marijuana) by only cutting the top of it. The roots stay there and will grow through next week, making all your work worthless. By all means I am not trying you to stop sporting, it can be actually very healthy for you. But if your goal is to lose weight the only logical thing to do is to start with the root, stress.
This is where the greatness of theanine shines. Normally you had to battle your body, which resisted weight loss during stress. Theanine neutrelizes stress completely, by reducing your anxiety and improving the quality of your sleep. It does this by increasing the alpha waves in your brain, which relaxes the mind.
With these problems removed now your body
- Won't store all the fat you eat
- won't resist weight loss
- won't give you increased feelings of hunger
Take theanine and you can balance your body. If you now started sporting and/or dieting you would feel better, look more confident and most important get better results!
Theanine and weight loss looks like a strange combination at first, but after reading this I hope you have a better understanding why this is the perfect solution. But there are probably more benefits that come with theanine, why is so little covered? Good question the answer is I already covered most uses for theanine which u can check right here.
